Sky Art tree created by Parkdale Elementary

Parkdale Sky Art in the News!!!

We had a wonderful week of weather for our Sky Art Project.  The sunshine and the clear view of the mountain made for fantastic photos and filming.  If you missed us on the front page of the Hood River News, you can see us on the Internet!  Go to    Artforthesky.com    and click on Gallery, then Videos.  Our video is named Tree of Hope.

Students will receive a postcard of the Tree with the school and Mt. Hood in the background.  We also hope to make copies of the DVD.  If you have a DVD burner and are willing to help with this project, please call the school office at 352-6255..

School Talent Show

2008 Parkdale talent show is scheduled for Wednesday, June 11 at 12:15 p.m.  Any Parkdale student or staff member may participate.  Tryouts will take place during music class.  Students will need to remember that only songs/CDs with appropriate lyrics, dance moves and dress will be accepted.  Students may also display art work as part of our talent show.  Parents are certainly invited!

Lunch Charges and Lost and Found

After Friday, June 6, students will no longer be able to charge for lunches.  All unpaid charges must be paid by the end of the school year.  Please check the Lost and Found in the cafeteria for any clothing you might be missing.  Any clothing left will be donated to charity.

2008-09 Class Lists

Parkdale Elementary staff will soon be involved in a team effort to assign students to class-rooms for next year.  Our goal is to assure that each child is placed into the best possible learning environment and to create balanced classes.  We consider factors such as learning styles, balance of ethnic background, boy/girl ratio, personalities, behavior and student cliques, balance of student and ability level in addition to others. Class lists will be available for parents and students on the last day of school.  Next year there will be no changes in our staff.

 Summer Library Program

Be sure to sign up for the Parkdale Library Summer Program!  Great evening activities, a reading contest and lots of prizes!  Students will be visiting the library on June 4 to get all the information.  Don’t miss out – sign up today!!!!  This program is co-sponsored by Hood River County School District.

Summer Reading Tip:  Watch this. NO – Read it!

One of the BIG movies for this summer is based on the book Prince Caspian from the Chronicles of Narnia series.  Critics say it’s a great movie – even better than it’s predecessor, The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe.   Movies are fun and  fast (you can see the entire movie in two hours but it might take two weeks to read the book).

Some people say books are always better than the movies – that is often true.  Did you know they really are better for your brain?  Like all muscles, the brain benefits from a good workout.  Reading is much more demanding than processing images or understanding speech.  When you read, several different parts of the brain must work together as a team to see the words, decode them, and make meaning of what you are reading.  A Yale University scientist says, “When you read, you have more time to think.  Reading give you a unique pause button for comprehension and insight.  By and large, with oral language – when you watch a film or listen to a tape – you don’t press pause.

Many students lose learning over the summer because they exercise their bodies and not their minds.   This summer, make sure your child exercises both – visit the library, check out books, or read magazines under a tree in the shade.  Just a few minutes of “brain exercise” will keep your child healthy, wealthy and wise, as the old saying goes…….

Make sure to stop by school for a visit or better yet be a school volunteer!
