Westside
Elementary (K-5) is located in a rapidly growing area west of Hood River.
The school was built in 1969 as a forward-looking, open plan school without
walls. In 1994-95, the building was remodeled, walls were added between
classrooms, and a new gym and ten classrooms were added. Westside
Dual Language Charter
School (WDLCS) is housed at Westside
Elementary. Of the 24 classes of students at the combined schools, 11 are
classes of WDLCS and 13 are classes of Westside Elementary. The purpose of
Westside Dual Language Charter School is to provide instruction in English and
Spanish, while teaching content areas, so that students over time will become
fluent in both languages. Westside Elementary students are taught basic Spanish
nouns and phrases, but will not be expected to reach fluency.
