Wy’east’s Bullying Prevention Week

Wy’east students recently participated in Bullying Prevention Awareness Week activities. These included discussions about identifying bullying and what to do to prevent it. In addition, students made a personal commitment to stop bullying here at our school.
Staff and students are working together to ensure that Wy’east is a safe learning environment for all. As a parent, you can help too by encouraging your students to report bullying behavior. Students can always talk to a Wy’east staff member or another adult when they are being bullied or have witnessed bullying. 
Wy’east staff has recently developed one more way for students to notify an adult. The new Online Bullying Reporting Form is a way for students to report negative behavior from any computer without having to make the report in person. You can check it out by following these instructions:

1. Go to http://school.gorge.net/hrcsd/wyeast/
2. Click on the “Behavior Reporting” link.
3. Students will fill out the online form and click send.

 

The form is sent via email to Mrs. Dalbey, Mr. Hedberg, and Mr. Harder for review. They will then follow up on the concern.
Please take some time to check in with your student about bullying. Let’s work together to make Wy’east safe for everyone.

Wy’east’s webpage is a great resource for parents and students to find lots of great information.  One important feature of the Wy’east webpage is DataPort, a parent’s resource to check their student’s attendance, schedule and quarterly report card.  The information in DataPort is updated everyday to make sure all the information is up-to-date.  Here’s how you can access this great resource…

1. Open your Internet browser
2. Go to the Wy’east webpage… http://www.school.gorge.net/hrcsd/wyeast/
3. Near the top of the page, click on the “Data Port” link
4. Click on the “Parent Link”.  Here parents will find a variety of options.
5. To view your student’s attendance, schedule and/or quarterly report card, click on “All Students”
6. Enter your child’s District ID number (6-digit) with their birthdate, eliminating any leading zeros (see instructions on the page for examples).
7. Click on “Find Student”
8. If the system can find your student, you’ll see a page that lists your student’s attendance for the year, their current schedule and their class grades for each quarter that has been graded.

In Sixth Grade Language Arts, the students' favorite class, we are studying appositives. In addition, we are working on research papers in class. Our study of Ancient Egypt in Social Studies has provided an exciting subject for writing in Language Arts class. We continue our study of SAT words and topic sentences. Large projects include the Egypt pamphlet and the research paper on eagles.
Science:  Now that the 6th graders have mastered the Scientific Method, it’s time to move on and start learning about the building blocks of matter and the criteria for life.  Ask your student to tell you what 3 things everything is made of and how they can determine if something is a living organism.  Students have created a new & unique creature complete with all the characteristics of a real organism including an energy source and a suitable environment.  After an introduction to plant & animal cells we’ll head in a different direction & start exploring how the earth, sun & moon interact to give us our seasons and lunar phases - a very interactive and engaging unit for the students! 

Math:  Fractions, fractions, and more fractions!!!  Starting a new book is always exciting for the students and these past couple of weeks has been a whirlwind of finishing up whole number work and moving into the scary world of fractions & decimals.  Students have begun folding strips of paper and cutting up long pieces of string to help them gain a deeper understanding of parts of a whole.  By the end of this unit your kids will have fractions licked so make sure you brush up on them or you may find yourself with the shorter half of your piece of the pie! ;)

Students are busily preparing for a production on January 24th and 25th. The seventh grade has selected a thriller called “The Tarot of Terror”. It’s a little out of season for the  “Christmas Spirit”, but It is a interesting tale of three couples who are summoned to a haunted Scottish castle, and well the rest you will have to come and see for yourself. The 8th grade has selected a horror parody called “Horrors Inc.”. Here a terribly outdated business managed and staffed by monsters is enduring serious financial troubles, but there are two unwitting visitors who are dying to help out. The rehearsals are going well, and the students are anxious for an audience. So please be sure to mark your calendars for 7:00 -8:30 pm on January 24th and 25th. (This year we have an alternate snow performance days should weather become a challenge.)

8th Grade Academic Probation
Here at Wy’east we want to encourage students to strive for academic success.  One example of academic success is “no failing grades”.  When a student achieves academic success, it becomes a positive factor in preparing him/her for the next big step in their education… High School.  Academic success also earns them the privilege of participating in the end-of-the-year Academic Promotion Ceremony and Dance. 
Each quarter, your student displays evidence of their academic success through their quarterly report card.  When students fail any of their classes, they are not experiencing academic success.  In an effort to intervene early and find solutions to problems that may be preventing your student from succeeding in class, he/she is immediately placed on academic probation for the duration of the next quarter.
Much like a three-legged stool, your student’s success needs three legs that can support it.  Parents, school staff and the student him/herself are the three legs on which that success rests on.  When an 8th grade student is placed on probation, it becomes our goal to ensure that all three legs are getting the support necessary to experience success. 
One leg of the support system is provided by the school.  Extra study hall opportunities as well as the after-school Project PM program are offered to provide the student with extra time to work on assignments.  Weekly feedback to both the student and parents to track progress and catch problems early is provided in the form of progress reports.  Organizational tools are also available in the form of student journals to help students track their assignments and deadlines.
Another leg of support is the parent(s).  It is very beneficial for your student to have a routine study time and place at home where they can focus on homework and be assured that you’re there to support them in any way you can.  Communication with the school also helps to keep you informed of what is expected of your student and what you can do to reinforce what he learns in school.
The most important leg of success is the student.  The student must make the choice to work hard, stay focused, and be diligent with their class responsibilities.  It’s up to them to communicate with teachers when there’s a question.  It’s up to them to create their own success.
At the end of the school year, if the student has become academically successful and is NOT failing any classes, they’ve proven they CAN be successful and will earn that privilege of participating in the Academic Promotion Ceremony and dance and move up to the High School better prepared and with more confidence.  If you have any questions regarding the academic probation process, please don’t hesitate to contact the school for more information.

For November 2007
Wy’east would like to acknowledge 8th grader, Torey Schmidt, and his work and support with our High Needs students.  Torey is not only a Lunch-Buddy for the High Needs kids (enjoying lunch and community activities), he also spends his Enrichment period helping out in Mr. Pruitt’s Wood Shop class.  He has created some great friendships with these kids and they enjoy his presence in class.  We’d like to thank Torey for going beyond being a Wy’east student and showing what an outstanding Wy’east citizen can accomplish!!

Celebrando la Semana en prevención del acoso escolar
Muchos quizás se pregunten, ¿que es acoso escolar?  Acoso escolar se entiende como el hostigamiento y maltrato verbal o físico entre escolares de forma reiterada en el tiempo. Para que ocurra debe haber un sujeto acosador, una víctima y un conflicto de fuerzas. El sujeto maltratado queda expuesto física y emocionalmente ante sujeto maltratador.
Recientemente los estudiantes de Wy’east participaron en actividades relacionadas con la Semana en prevención del acoso escolar.  Las actividades incluyeron discusiones acerca de como identificar a los maltratadores y como prevenir ser un victima.  Adicionalmente los estudiantes estuvieron de acuerdo que no aceptarían este tipo de comportamiento en nuestra escuela.   
El personal junto con los estudiantes están trabajando para asegurar que Wy’east siga siendo un lugar seguro y positivo.  Como padre, usted puede ayudar también por medio de encomiar a su hijo que reporten este tipo de comportamiento.  Los estudiantes pueden consultar a un maestro o a otro adulto si son victimas o si son testigos de algún acoso escolar. 
El personal de Wy’east recientemente desarrollo una manera innovadora para reportar acosos escolares.  De aquí en adelante los estudiantes podrán reportar acosos escolares por medio del Internet con la forma electrónica para reportar acosos escolares.Siga las siguientes instrucciones para buscar la forma:

• Elija el link “Behavior Reporting”.
• Los estudiantes llenaran la forma y después deberían elegir “send.”

 

Automáticamente la forma llega al correo electrónico de Sr. Hedberg, Sr. Harder y Sra. Dalbey.  Ellos entonces la revisan y actúan según la circunstancia.

En clase de Escritura y gramatica, la clase favorite de los estudiantes, estamos estudiando apositivos.  Adicionalmente, estamos a punto de terminar unos reportes investigativos de antiguo Egipto.  Seguimos estudiando vocabulario y como escribir buenas oraciones.  También están a punto de terminar sus folletos de Egipto y un reporte investigativo sobre águilas. 
Clase de ciencia: Seguimos estudiando el método de ciencia pero ahora nos enfocamos en aprender sobre células y lo que es requerido para un ser organismo vivo.  Pídale a su hijo-a que le diga tres cosas necesarias para que algo sea un organismo vivo.  Después de la introducción a células de plantas y animales, seguiremos con un tema diferente.  Empezaremos a explorar como el planeta tierra, sol y luna nos dan nuestras estaciones.  ¡Este será una unidad muy interesante! 

Matemáticas: La transición a un nuevo libro siempre es algo emocionante para un estudiante.  Ahora estamos aprendiendo acerca de fracciones y decimales.  Los estudiantes han estado repartiendo y doblando tiras de papel para mejor ayudar su entendimiento de fracciones.   Al terminar la unidad los estudiantes tendrán mejor idea de lo importante que son las fracciones.  

            Actualmente los estudiantes se están preparando para una obra de teatro  que se presentara el 24 y 25 de Enero. Los estudiantes de 7º grado seleccionaron una obra de teatro escalofriante llamada “The Tarot of Terror”.  Es un cuento interesante de tres parejas que son mandadas a llamar a un castillo escocés.  Los estudiantes de 8º grado seleccionaron una obra espantosa llamada “Horrors Inc.”  Este cuento habla de un negocio que esta a punto de caer y es manejado por monstruos que no saben calcular sus gastos.  Sin embargo, hay una pareja que quiere ayudar.  Los ensayos van bien, y los estudiantes están ansiosos por tener un público.  ¡Marquen sus calendarios por favor!  24 y 25 de Enero,  de 7:00 a 8:30 p.m.

Periodo de prueba académico

Aquí en Wy’east encomiamos a nuestros estudiantes que hagan lo mas posible por tener éxito en sus estudios.  El tener éxito académico significa no recibir calificaciones malas.  Cuando un estudiante logra esto le ayudara a tener éxito también en la preparatoria.  Al estudiante que no tenga éxito académico se le quitara el privilegio de asistir la ceremonia y actividades relacionadas con la graduación al fin del año escolar.  
Cada cuarto escolar su hijo- a despliega evidencia de su éxito académico por medio de sus calificaciones.  Si su hijo-a recibe malas calificaciones son puestos en periodo de prueba académico para prevenir que sigan con la rutina de malas calificaciones. 
Muy parecido a una banca con tres patas es el éxito académico de su hijo.  Los padres, el personal y su hijo son las patas de la banca y sin ellas no funcionaría.   Cuando un estudiante es puesto en periodo de prueba académico, es nuestra meta asegurarnos de que las tres patas estén en su lugar.  
Una pata del sistema de apoyo es proveída por la escuela.  Los siguientes medios están disponibles para ayudar a los estudiantes: salón de estudio, Proyecto PM, vía de comunicación entre padres y maestro, reportes semanales de progreso académico, y revisar el diario estudiantil. 
Otra pata del sistema de apoyo es los padres.  Es muy beneficioso que su hijo tenga un hora y un lugar donde el pueda terminar sus estudios.  El tener una vía de comunicación   entre los padres y la escuela es también sumamente importante. 
La pata más importante es el estudiante.  El estudiante tiene que hacer la decisión de de trabajar duro, mantenerse enfocado y ser diligente con sus responsabilidades académicas.  Es la responsabilidad de cada estudiante comunicar a su maestro si hay preguntas. 
Al terminar el año escolar, si el estudiante tiene calificaciones malas no podrá participar en las festividades de la graduación.  Sin embargo, si el estudiante no esta en periodo de prueba académico el podrá participar y a las vez estar listo para la preparatoria.

Noviembre del 2007 Cuando los estudiantes demuestran comportamiento ejemplar en diferentes facetas de la vida diaria, nos da placer reconocer sus logros.  Cada mes escogemos a cinco estudiantes quien son estudiantes ejemplares.

¡Felicidades a Torey Schmidt, estudiante del 8º grado, por ser nombrado “ciudadano del mes” de Noviembre!  A Torey lo reconocemos por su trabajo que desempeña con los estudiantes de alta necesidad.  Además de ser un “compañero de almuerzo”, Torey pasa su ultimo periodo ayudándole a Sr. Pruitt con su clase de obras de madera.  Queremos darle gracias a Torey por ser un modelo ejemplar y por enseñar que tan buen ciudadano un estudiante puede ser.
