Two Columbia Teachers Earn National Board Certification
Columbia High School has doubled its number of teachers who have earned the prestigious title of National Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs). English teacher Omar Sankari and Social Studies teacher Peter Knowles have joined fellow CHS teachers Katy Dutra and Shirlee Jellum as members of an exclusive group of teachers who have met the rigorous standards set by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.
Successful completion of the National Board program requires a teacher to spend hours documenting, critiquing, and improving his or her teaching methods and approach in the classroom. In addition to work with students, NBCTs must also demonstrate leadership and innovation among their peers, with parents, and in their communities, and demonstrate strong knowledge of their subjects through successful completion of a series of content area tests.
Sankari and Knowles were two of 314 new NBCTs in the state of Washington this year, bringing the total number of Washington State NBCTs to 897. With a total of over 53,000 teachers statewide, NBCTs make up less than 2% of Washington teachers. But, with the addition of Sankari and Knowles to the ranks, they make up almost 20% of teachers at CHS.
