Two More Columbia Teachers Earn National Board Certification
The White Salmon School District has gained two more National Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs). Business teacher Jan Callow and Industrial Technology teacher Chris Hipskind join English teachers Omar Sankari, Katy Dutra and Shirlee Jellum, and Social Studies teacher Peter Knowles as recipients of the honor.
To earn board certification, all met the rigorous standards set by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. Successful completion of the National Board program requires a teacher to spend hours documenting, critiquing, and improving his or her teaching methods and approach in the classroom. In addition to work with students, NBCTs must also demonstrate leadership and innovation among their peers, with parents, and in their communities, and demonstrate strong knowledge of their subjects through successful completion of a series of content area tests.
Callow and Hipskind were two of 484 new NBCTs across the state of Washington this year. Washington State ranked 5th among states in the number of new NBCTs this year, and becomes 10th in the number of total NBCTs over time with 1,792.
