Middle School Reading Teacher (0.7 FTE)

Position

Henkle Middle School has an opening for a 0.7 FTE Reading Teacher to teach reading to fifth, sixth and seventh grade students who are below grade level in their reading performance. The position requires Washington State Teacher Certification in language arts, reading, or K-8 general education, or the equivalent from another state, including the requirements to obtain appropriate Washington State certification.

Although pedagogical expertise in helping middle school students make strong gains in reading skill is most desirable, even more important is the demonstrated ability to effectively teach. The middle school has the capacity to help a talented teacher learn the skills he/she needs to specialize in helping students improve as readers.

Duties include

  • highly knowledgeable about effective instruction, curriculum, and assessment practices to help struggling readers make strong improvement;
  • highly knowledgeable about the development of literacy;
  • strong desire to positively "make a difference" in the lives of students;
  • demonstrated ability to positively and effectively manage classroom discipline;
  • demonstrated ability to interact and relate with students from a variety of backgrounds;
  • demonstrated ability to teach English Language Learner students;
  • demonstrated ability to work successfully with a variety of adults, including parents and community members, in an educational setting-strong interpersonal skills;
  • demonstrated ability to plan and implement curriculum, instruction, and assessment as part of an instructional team of teachers and paraeducators;
  • demonstrated commitment to continuous learning and collegiality as part of a professional "community of learners";
  • demonstrated willingness to share in normal school responsibilities and to help with non-instructional school activities.
